O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. She made it to the 100th round due to the fact that judges were awed by her vocal performances. Her performance was highly applauded by judges. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for bottom 3, and bottom 2. The judges were surprised at her performance and recommended viewers to select contestants who sang well like Melissa. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. With two other stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, as O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, judge Werner reported that newspaper headlines were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
